3 tips to write a great college essay

1. check your tone of voice: the tone of your writing is critical. you can be funny, humorous & creative but within limits. consider the audience you are writing for, make sure that your writing doesn’t come across as arrogant or offensive, or doesn’t leave the reader feeling uncomfortable.
   

2. keep it simple: writing an essay can be cathartic, and while your first few drafts may be lengthy and even wordy, it’s important to stay focused on what you write. please do not overuse the thesaurus to sound impressive, it only makes your message more complicated. the best writing is often one that is candid, simple & reflective.
   

3. get another perspective: if you have a mentor, request advice on your essay. getting someone to read the essay helps you identify what you can change about your writing. use some feedback to shape up and add clarity to your writing. proof-reading your essay is key.
